Report shares what Aston Villa have told transfer targets about future of exit-linked gem
Aston Villa have told potential transfer targets that Jack Grealish is staying at the club despite ‘growing’ interest from Man City, according to The Athletic.
Dean Smith is striving to strengthen his attacking midfield options on the back of signing Norwich City maestro Emiliano Buendia. The Argentine joined the Villans earlier this month for £33m, in a club-record deal that can reach £38m.
Villa are also considering a second offer for Arsenal playmaker Emile Smith Rowe, after they rejected a £25m bid. The Birmingham outfit have marked another attacking player as their priority and are prepared to spend big.
Smith has identified the position as an area he wants to strengthen as he is keen to take the pressure off of his defenders. The Aston Villa boss believes it is key to ensuring any future success and aims to dominate games for longer.
Aston Villa are telling their potential targets that Grealish will be staying at the club this summer, as well. But Man City are keen to take the England gem to the Etihad Stadium and their interest is ‘growing’.
Reports by The Sun also claim Grealish’s camp believe Villa have given them the go ahead to secure a transfer. Pep Guardiola is desperate to sign the 25-year-old to boost the Citizens’ chances of defending the Premier League title.
Grealish offered six goals and 12 assists in the top-flight last season, despite missing 12 games through injury. The nine-cap star has since shone at Euro 2020 with England and should play a leading role under Gareth Southgate.
TBR’s view: Villa playing risky game with Grealish claims
Aston Villa are playing a risky game by telling transfer targets that Grealish will be staying at the club, despite the considerable interest from Man City.
It can leave new arrivals feeling Villa sold them a dream in negotiations they were unable to keep real. They may then be less happy about joining a club where the expectations did not turn into a reality.
But Villa will hope that any possible signing arrives with their eyes open to the potential of Grealish leaving. It would be a mistake on the player’s part to join a club because of the presence of one star over the full package on offer.
