According to a report from The Mirror today, Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard has put Liverpool defender, Joe Gomez, on the top of his summer shopping list.
Gerrard is known to be an admirer of Gomez and was linked with a move for the defender almost as soon as he came into the job at Villa Park. And The Mirror has now claimed that the Villa boss is ready to test Liverpool’s resolve this summer by moving for the defender.

Gomez is down the pecking order at Liverpool, although he did play recently against Watford and Jurgen Klopp actually called him ‘outstanding’ for his performance that day. But with first-team football not a regular fixture for Gomez now, a summer move could appeal.
Gerrard is thought to be eyeing a summer overhaul of his Villa squad this summer. He wants to sign Gomez and more, and is willing to let a number of players leave, too. The Mirror claims as many as eight first-teamers could be on their way in the summer months.
TBR’s View: Joe Gomez To Villa Would Be Good All Around
Joe Gomez is too good to be playing third or fourth fiddle and while he might not want to leave a big club like Liverpool, he could do far worse than join Gerrard at Villa.
The former Rangers manager is one of the best up and coming coaches in the game. His work in Scotland was superb and there is a feeling in the Midlands that Gerrard will be successful with Villa.
If Gomez has ambitions of getting back towards the England squad, then he does need to play regularly. A move to Villa can help him do that, and he’s likely to be a first-choice if he does sign.
