Tyrone Mings made his England debut in Sofia last night as the Three Lions strolled to a 6-0 victory against Bulgaria to move within touching distance of Euro 2020.

A night that should have been about nothing but pride for the Aston Villa man was affected by racial abuse from the stands and the defender had his say to the BBC.

He said: “I am proud of how we dealt with it and took the appropriate steps. I could hear it as clear as day. It doesn’t affect me too much. I feel more sorry for those people who feel they have to have those opinions.

“It was a great night for me personally. It was a really proud moment in my career. I hope everyone enjoys this moment and it isn’t overshadowed.”

Tottenham’s Harry Kane and Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson, as well as Villa team-mates Ezri Konsa, Jack Grealish, Frederic Guilbert and Conor Hourihane all sent Instagram messages to Mings in the comments of his post-match upload.

TBR’s View – Mings performed impressively in testing circumstances

It hardly seems fair to judge Mings’ England debut in the context of what went on off the pitch, because it could have affected the composure of a lesser player.

But he kept his head, moved the ball effectively and showed his class with his post-match comments. The reaction from his team-mates was classy as well.

It is now over to the authorities to deliver a suitable punishment, but it remains to be seen whether they will step up to the mark.
