Aston Villa are reportedly interested in midfielder Baptiste Santamaria from French top-flight club Angers SCO.
According to Le 10 Sport, Villa scouts have been eyeing the 23-year-old after being deployed across Ligue 1.
It is understood that Villa are looking over the in-demand ace alongside clubs Saint-Etienne, Bordeaux and Strasbourg.
Villa have frequently picked up signings from the French league in recent years and one success was Idrissa Gueye from Lille in 2015.
The central midfielder ended up leaving for Everton after impressing in the West Midlands, so could Villa now find another version?
Santamaria is a defensive midfielder that has been a decent performer this season for Angers this season in Ligue 1 and been involved in every single match so far.
The Frenchman is a no-nonsense enforcer that operates in front of the defence, where is strong at winning the ball and breaking up attacks.
His performances so far this campaign have caught the attention of several clubs and it would be interesting to see if Dean Smith’s side could tempt him to England.
Villa could do with an extra defensive midfield option for the second half of the campaign, as senior pair Mile Jedinak and Glenn Whelan are the existing options in the squad.
Santamaria has a mammoth way to go if he is to turn out like Everton star Gueye, but he’s proof that bargain deals do exist.
