Aston Villa are reportedly one of the teams interested in signing enforcer Isaac Hayden from Premier League club Newcastle United.

According to the Mirror, Championship duo Villa and West Brom are strongly keen on the 23-year-old in the January transfer window.

It is understood that Newcastle have already turned down a loan approach from West Brom for the central midfielder, but he previously admitted he wants to leave St James’ Park for family reasons.

Hayden’s immediate future remains unclear, but there is no doubt he could be a smart addition to Dean Smith’s squad if they can get a deal over the line.

The Newcastle ace is a no-nonsense defensive midfielder that has shown in glimpses his quality and he was previously on the book at Arsenal as a youngster.

Hayden helped Rafael Benitez’s side secure promotion from the Championship in the 2016/17 campaign and can be a rock in front of the defence when on form.

He’s been in and out of the starting XI during the club’s time in the top flight and a fresh move could be good for him.

Villa are currently 10th-placed in the Championship and need to bridge a five-point gap to the play-offs by the end of the season.

Smith’s side are more than capable of getting back in the promotion picture and a couple of astute January signings should boost them.

They could do with an imposing figure with Championship know-how like Hayden to tighten up the team and he could put pressure on Glenn Whelan for his position.
