Leeds United are reportedly looking to sign Aston Villa captain James Chester this summer to solve their centre-back concerns – and he would be the perfect addition this summer.
The Daily Star have claimed that the 30-year-old is a target for Marcelo Bielsa’s side, with £7.5million said to be enough to land the Wales international. He has less than 12 months remaining on his contract.
Chester may have been pushed down the pecking order this summer, with Dean Smith signing four new centre-backs. He has spent more around £50million on Tyrone Mings, Ezri Konsa, Bjorn Engels and Kortney Hause.
It may see Chester plummet to fourth or fifth choice, and with his contract set to expire next summer, Villa will have to sell the ex-West Brom and Hull City star if they are to bring in some cash for his services.
Leeds sold Pontus Jansson to Brentford earlier this month, and only have Ben White on loan from Brighton alongside Liam Cooper as centre-back options. Bielsa needs to bring in another central defender.
Though £7.5million is a large sum for Leeds, they are getting a proven Championship and indeed Premier League performer. One with promotion experience with Hull, but one with leadership and international experience.
Confident on the ball but tough in the tackle and impenetrable in the air, Chester is certainly worth the figure touted for his services. If Leeds sign the Welsh ace, their chances of promotion massively improve.
