Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn has revealed he is aiming to return to action in around five to six weeks time.

The Scotland international has been sidelined since suffering a broken ankle against Southampton on December 21.

The 25-year-old unfortunately got his studs stuck in the turf, and had to be replaced after just eight minutes against the Saints, with Villa going on to lose the game 3-1.

Little has really been heard about McGinn’s progress, but manager Dean Smith recently suggested he could be fit for the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City.

He said: (Express & Star): “Knowing John, he would probably have pencilled in the cup final; knowing the medical staff, they will have rubbed that out.

“He is a fighter and a quick healer. I would not rule it out.”

Smith wouldn’t rule it out, but McGinn seemingly now has.

Telling Aston Villa fan Prince William at the FA’s recent Heads Together mental health campaign in London (Daily Star): “About five to six weeks, I’ll be back.”

TBR’s view – McGinn is a massive miss for Villa

Should Villa lose the cup final to City in March, or be relegated from the Premier League in May, or both, then they can certainly point towards McGinn’s injury as a significant moment in their 2019/20 season.

Before his injury, McGinn had been one of the standout players in the English top-flight.

The star was showing tremendous work ethic but also great quality on the ball week-in week-out, and Smith’s side have been somewhat stung by his absence, winning just three of the seven games since the injury.

WhoScored had him as the star man on four occasions in the Premier League, and his average rating of 7.26 is very impressive.
