Scotland midfielder John McGinn has revealed that he had his “heart set” on a move to Celtic in summer 2018.

McGinn nearly joined Celtic when he was leaving Hibernian. He admitted he discussed the move with Neil Lennon, who was then his Hibs manager and is now the Celtic boss.

The 25-year-old has carved out a successful career since moving to Aston Villa instead. He has chalked up over 50 appearances, 10 goals and promotion to the Premier League. McGinn is currently starring in the Premier League but he could have been at Celtic.

Speaking on Scottish Football Extra on BT Sport (via The Birmingham Mail), McGinn said: “It was awful. The summer was extremely tough for me, especially as it was such an important time for Hibs.

“I think Celtic had a few offers at the time and openly I had my heart set on it. I’d spoken to everyone at Hibs including Neil Lennon, who ironically is now the Celtic manager. I’m wrapped in a Celtic bubble up the road. A lot of my family are Celtic fans and all my friends go and follow them home and away. At the time it was so tough.”

McGinn would have been an asset for Celtic, especially if he was playing under Lennon. The pair worked together at Hibs and could have reunited at Parkhead.

Later when he was speaking, McGinn refused to close the door on a return. He could yet become a Celtic player and win over the Bhoys fans.
