Aston Villa star Jack Grealish’s comments about Tottenham are somewhat risky

Jack Grealish has spoken of his disappointment over his failed summer move to Tottenham Hotspur.

The Aston Villa midfielder was the subject of intense interest from the north London giants towards the end of the transfer window.

Ultimately Spurs were put off by Villa’s asking price, and the player stayed put.

The star has made 117 first-team appearances for the Villans.

He has established himself as one of the best players in the Championship since the club’s relegation from the Premier League in 2016.

Naturally he was going to court the attention of some big clubs, and Spurs were the favourites to land him.

Now, Grealish has spoken out about the moves that never was.

And he does risk upsetting the Villa supporters with his comments.

‘My head was swivelled’

Grealish has decided that honesty is the best policy, and revealed he really did come close to a move to north London. He told the Telegraph: “Of course there’s going to be disappointment there. They’ve beaten Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, they’re playing Barcelona in the Champions League next week.

“I felt that if I’d gone there I could have maybe been in the England squad by the end of the year.

“At the start of the season my head was swivelled, it was all over the place. Even after the transfer window closed, until the end of August, I wasn’t right.”

A tad disrespectful?

Grealish may be attempting to bring some closure to the saga, now that he has signed a new deal, but his comments could be perceived as being disrespectful.

To talk about a failed move and admit that it would have done wonders for his England hopes, is a bit questionable.

It’s a kick in the teeth for those who idolise him week in week out.

It’s as though he’s a bit hung up about it. Perhaps he should be showing his elation so soon after signing a new deal.

When he inevitably goes through a poor spell, as all players tend to in any given season, fans may think back to these comments and accuse him of not having his head in the game.
