According to the Daily Mail, West Brom have rejected a bid from Watford for Craig Dawson. However, the Baggies are still expected to cash in on the defender this summer.
The 29-year-old is keen to move on from the Hawthorns and only has one year to run on his current contract. Slaven Bilic will likely allow the versatile defender to leave this summer for the right price.
Watford could return with another bid to prise Dawson away. However, Aston Villa would be wise to enter the race for Dawson’s signature. The Villans may be bitter rivals of West Brom, but that should not put Dean Smith off of pursuing a deal for Dawson.
Following Aston Villa’s promotion to the Premier League, Smith will be keen to bolster his side’s defence. Dawson represents an affordable option for adding some extra depth to the defensive ranks at Villa Park.
What’s more, Dawson also has plenty of Premier League experience. That kind of knowledge can be invaluable in the dressing room, and Dawson could assist his teammates in getting to grips with life in the top flight. The West Brom man’s versatility also makes him a valuable asset, as he is comfortable operating as both a centre-back and a right-back.
Aston Villa should swoop for Dawson now, before Watford have chance to return with a better offer.
