Aston Villa should avoid Harry Winks from Spurs, he doesn't improve their midfield - TBR View
Aston Villa are once again actively pursuing the market to improve their squad this summer, as Dean Smith looks to build on last season.
The Villans were a huge success after narrowly avoiding relegation the season prior. Smith managed to get Jack Grealish playing brilliantly, while those around the England man also clicked.
The chances is there, then, for Villa to really build this summer. A number of names have already been linked. And one such player being mentioned a lot is Spurs and England midfielder, Harry Winks.
Spurs have reportedly put Winks on a list of six players who can leave in the summer.
But while Winks is a decent enough midfielder in his own right, surely Villa can spend their money more wisely in other areas?
The issue with bringing Winks into the club is that he doesn’t offer the immediate upgrade a big signing should. Villa already have talent in midfield, and it’s questionable whether Winks is better.
John McGinn is outstanding and won’t be dropped any time soon. Douglas Luiz has also been exceptional, while Marvelous Nakamba has done well when called upon.
Morgan Sanson was signed not too long ago, and Dean Smith thinks a lot about Jacob Ramsey. All in all, that depth of talent means Winks is likely to be on the bench again.
Villa need players who are going to improve the XI. Kicking on and challenging for Europe is the next step. And while yes, squad depth is important, the only way to really challenge is to improve the starting line up.
That will take money, and it will take the right talent. Unfortunately, despite Winks having 10 England caps, his recent form suggests he’s not the man to take Villa to that next step.
