Aston Villa reportedly to sell midfielder; Celtic have got to take action, and sign player who 'hates Rangers'

Conor Hourihane sparkled on loan at Swansea last season. But his form for the Welsh club has not convinced Aston Villa to keep the Ireland midfielder at Villa Park. Instead, they will now look to sell him permanently. Celtic have got to be on red alert, especially because of his Rangers comments.

Hourihane, 30, managed just four Premier League appearances for Villa during the first half of the 2020-21 campaign. It convinced the ex-Barnsley skipper to leave on loan, and he moved to Swansea City. Clocking up 24 outings, he had a hand in seven goals from midfield.

Returning to Villa, Hourihane has a year left on his deal. The Athletic claim that Villa are looking to get a ‘healthy transfer fee’ for Hourihane – more than the £2million they paid to get him. So, for a fee of maybe £3million, Celtic have got to be on red alert – not just because of his Rangers claim.

Hates Rangers? Why Celtic have got to sign Villa ace Hourihane…

In a video posted on Facebook, Hourihane is doing a lie detector test – and is asked if there is a team he hates. Replying honestly, he says “Rangers”. Clearly, then, Hourihane is a Celtic fan. But the Hoops need a player like Hourihane more than just because he hates Steven Gerrard’s side.

Celtic need additions all over the pitch – but the one area they are currently well-stocked in is attacking midfield. Hourihane is best in that area, scoring and creating goals. But with Ryan Christie linked with the exit door, he will need replacing. At a bargain fee little over £2million, Hourihane is ideal.

While he is slightly older, he is showing no signs of slowing down. His experience would be crucial for a club like Celtic as they embark on a title challenge with Rangers next season. Of course, having that hatred and knowledge of the Old Firm rivalry might just help Hourihane.
