Aston Villa are reportedly set to offer Brentford £20 million for their star striker Neal Maupay this summer. The Sun is reporting that Aston Villa are ready to pay the fee for the player as a replacement for Tammy Abraham, who will be heading back to Chelsea after his loan deal at Villa Park.

The report suggests that Aston Villa are ‘willing to flex their financial muscle’ to sign the French striker.

Maupay was a star in the Championship last season. The 22-year-old scored 28 goals in all competitions, many of which came under the guidance of Aston Villa boss Dean Smith.

The pair worked together at Griffin Park which could also give Aston Villa the edge in any transfer discussions.

The deal would break Aston Villa’s current transfer record, which stands at £18 million paid for Darren Bent in 2011.

TBR’s View

Replacing the 26 goals that Tammy Abraham scored for Aston Villa last season is a major task for Dean Smith. If Aston Villa are to be successful in the Premier League they need to be successful in this regard.

Maupay could certainly be that man. Strong, fast and deadly in front of goal the Frenchman has all the attributes to shine in the top-flight.

The fact that Smith has worked with the player is also a massive boost. The Aston Villa manager knows how to get the best out of the player, which minimises the risk of investment.

The price-tag may seem steep, but that is the market these days and Aston Villa will struggle to find many more potent options at a lesser price.

Aston Villa fans should certainly hope this deal has momentum.
