Aston Villa reportedly put Mattia Perin deal on ice, Monaco ready to swoop

Aston Villa’s pursuit of Tom Heaton has effectively ended any interest in Italian international Mattia Perin, according to reports.

Aston Villa appear to be closing in on the signature of Burnley’s England international. As reported by The Telegraph, an £8 million fee has been agreed between the two clubs. Aston Villa have long been linked with bringing in a new keeper this summer. Heaton was one of the first names mentioned, along with Stoke City’s Jack Butland and Cardiff City’s Neil Etheridge.

However, last week it looked as though Aston Villa were unlikely to get any of those targets and had moved on to Juventus stopper Perin.

Over the weekend, Corriere di Torino reported that Aston Villa were thrashing out a potential £13.5 million deal for the player. Juventus director Fabio Paratici had even met with Aston Villa about getting a deal done.

Now it seems, Perin is not headed to Villa Park. TuttoJuve is reporting that Aston Villa have, for the moment, frozen operations over the two-cap international. Whilst the report makes no mention of Heaton, it certainly seems the two incidents are related.

Monaco are believed to be on the hunt for a new keeper and the report claims the Ligue 1 club could step in to sign the player, who is currently sidelined with a shoulder injury.

Aston Villa fans would undoubtedly have been happy to see Perin arrive. That said, considering his current injury issues, it is perhaps best the transfer is on ice.

Heaton would arrive ready-to-go in the Premier League and at a reduced cost. There is no doubt which deal is better for Dean Smith’s men.
