Aston Villa are reportedly interested in the signature of German under-21 international Waldemar Anton, according to reports.
The 22-year-old Hannover centre-back is coming off the back of a difficult campaign with his club side. The Uzbekistani-born youngster captained Hannover for much of the season but lost the captaincy in October. Hannover finished second from bottom in the Bundesliga and were relegated to the German second-tier.
Despite his poor season, Anton is still highly rated. With relegation in mind, Anton has been linked with a number of clubs this summer. Aston Villa are now, seemingly, one of them.
As reported by Bild, Aston Villa have ‘put feelers out’ on a potential deal for the player. Eintracht Frankfurt and Lille are also interested, with a potential €10 million (£9 million) transfer fee reported.
Anton is expected to return to pre-season training next week after reaching the final of this summer’s European Under-21 Championships with Germany.
Hannover sporting director Jan Schlaudraff has made it clear there are currently no offers for the player, as reported by Hannoversche Allgemeine.
It would certainly seem a surprise move from Aston Villa at this stage. Anton is very talented and his sub-par 2018-19 was perhaps due to the burden of being handed captaincy at such a young age.
However, it seems Aston Villa already have centre-back targets covered. Not only have they signed Tyron Mings, but Ezri Konsa seems to be on his way. As reported by The Sun, the Brentford defender has undergone a medical at Aston Villa ahead of a potential £12 million move.
So a move for Anton, a similar player, would certainly appear unlikely.
