Aston Villa are reportedly rivalling two Turkish sides in a bid to lure Benfica winger Franco Cervi to Villa Park this summer – and the Argentine winger has been compared to that of Paris Saint-Germain superstar Angel Di Maria.
Cervi, 26, has been a crucial part of Benfica’s side since he joined the club from San Lorenzo in 2016. In just four seasons at Benfica, he has clocked up a whopping 151 outings – having a hand in 45 goals.
Such consistency and form has seen Cervi also play for Argentina on four occasions, but now he could be about to look for pastures new. Villa are keen as per A Bola, as are Besiktas and Alanyaspor ahead of the 2020-21 campaign.
Villa could be after a new left-winger with Jack Grealish reportedly interesting Manchester United, and Cervi could be the answer. Back in 2015, he was compared to former United and PSG sensational Di Maria.
“I haven’t seen a player like him for a long time, I really believe that since Di María, with whom he has several common characteristics,” Hugo Galloni told O Jogo in 2015, after coaching Cervi at San Lorenzo.
“If he goes to Portugal, you will see that he is a quick player, who does not hide. He is an imbalance. The control of the ball at speed across the line is like that of Di María. One of his virtues is the pace he imposes on the game.”
TBR’s view – Cervi would be a stunning signing for Villa
A proven Champions League player, Cervi even scored against Zenit St. Petersburg in the 2019-20 Champions League group stage. Capable of goals and assists at the highest level, he could be a top addition.
The Midlands outfit do boast Anwar El Ghazi, Trezeguet and other options out wide but they have shown this season they are somewhat inconsistent in the Premier League. Cervi is a level above.
