Aston Villa are reportedly looking to make their fourth centre-back signing this summer in the form of Stade Reims defender Bjorn Engels – and Leeds United have got take advantage.
If Villa do complete a deal for the Stade Reims defender, which is looking increasingly likely, then it will be the fourth centre-back they sign this summer after completing a deal for Ezri Konsa on Thursday.
Konsa joins Tyrone Mings and Kortney Hause in joining the Midlands club this summer, while Villa also boast captain James Chester in that position. But five players in a position that requires only two, is too many.
Leeds, meanwhile, are in need of a centre-back after offloading Pontus Jansson to Brentford – a move which allowed Villa to complete a deal for Konsa. The Whites boast just Liam Cooper, Ben White and youngster Pascal Struijk.
The Whites need to replace Jansson, and Villa skipper Chester is likely to be expendable if – and when – Villa sign Engels. Wales international Chester, 30, has entered the final 12 months of his Villa contract.
A 35-time international with Wales, Chester has enormous experience in the Championship as well as the Premier League – helping Hull City gain promotion to the top flight from the second tier in 2012-13.
That knowledge of the second tier, as well as his comfort on the ball at the back – something which Marcelo Bielsa looks for in a central defender – makes the £8million (Birmingham Mail) Villa signing the perfect recruit this summer.
