Aston Villa have reportedly joined the race to sign Bologna defender Aaron Hickey in the January window. Steven Gerrard’s side could face Celtic and Manchester City as competition – and Villa fans have reacted on Twitter.
One of Gerrard’s priorities in January is likely to either improve upon, or bring in competition for left-back Matty Targett. The exit of Neil Taylor has left Villa without a left-sided defender, other than centre-back Tyrone Mings.
Hickey, 19, is the latest player to be linked with a move to the Midlands club. Tuttosport – as per TeamTalk – report that Villa are on pole position to sign the ex-Hearts defender in the coming weeks and months.
It comes after a brilliant start to the 2021-22 season. Having only played 12 times in his first season at Bologna last season, he has already played 20 times this time around – featuring in every single Serie A game, starting 19.
In that time, he has scored an impressive five goals – either from left-back or left wing. CalcioMercato said earlier this season that both Celtic and Manchester City are also keen, with Edinburgh News saying he will cost £8million.

What are Villa fans saying as Gerrard rivals Celtic for Hickey?
For just £8million , there is no doubting that Hickey is an absolute bargain. At his age, combined with the form he is showing at the level he is performing, and the versatility he is capable of – £8million is nothing.
Villa fans have reacted on Twitter to the reports that the Midlands club are interested in signing Hickey in the coming months. Many believe it would be a good bit of business from Gerrard his management team.
