Aston Villa are set to try and bolster their squad by signing Olivier Giroud from Chelsea before the transfer window closes.

According to Le10 Sport in France, Inter Milan are keen on a deal for the experienced talisman but Villa remain keen.

Dean Smith has overseen just two wins in the last 10 Premier League games and desperately needs a lift.

Villa added Mbwana Samatta to their squad yesterday but it seems Smith would relish the chance to sign another striker.

Giroud has played five games in the league under Frank Lampard this season and is craving regular first-team football.

During his Premier League career with Chelsea and Arsenal, Giroud has found the net 78 times from 225 appearances.

He also has 39 goals from 97 France outings and he has largely been underrated during his time in England.

The Sun claims that Giroud is valued in the region of £8 million, whilst he earns £110,000-a-week at Chelsea (Spotrac).

A loan move is off the table for Giroud. Aston Villa already have Danny Drinkwater on loan from the Blues and Premier League rules state only one loan signing can be made from a single top-flight club.

Giroud is the man with the experience and know-how of the Premier League that can save them.

His goalscoring record is decent at the top level and he has won a World Cup medal during a pretty solid career.

Villa have lacked leaders this season and they desperately need a lift.

Giroud’s arrival could signal a change in mentality and help Smith’s team climb the Premier League table.
