Aston Villa have offered Boubacar Kamara a ‘big contract’ as boss Steven Gerrard has made the Marseille midfielder a ‘priority’ target for a free transfer.

That’s according to Jeunes Footeux, who report Gerrard has placed Kamara among his top summer targets. The England icon is desperate to improve his engine room in the next window after observing difficulties since taking charge.

Kamara is set to leave Marseille at the end of the season as his contract with the Ligue 1 side expires in June. OM had hoped to extend the Frenchman’s terms, but everything now points to a separation after 17-years.

Kamara joined Les Phoceens’ academy in 2005 and worked his way to become a star of the first-team. The 22-year-old has also sporadically donned the captain’s armband in OM’s bid to convince the defender-cum-midfielder to stay.

President Pablo Longoria still has a slim hope of convincing Kamara to renew, but is fighting widespread interest. Arsenal, Newcastle, Barcelona, Borussia Dortmund, AC Milan, Juventus and Roma are just some of his admirers.

But Aston Villa have moved to secure Kamara’s arrival in a free transfer as Gerrard greatly appreciates the Marseille star. The England legend particularly likes Kamara for the former France U21 dynamo’s versatility.

Kamara began his senior career in the heart of the Marseille defence before the Aston Villa transfer target moved into midfielde. His former OM teammate, Rolando, has long hailed his incredible potential and ball-winning ability.

“This kid is a phenomenon,” the Brazilian once told RMC Sport. “He is the kind of central defender that I like. He is full of qualities and, above all, he works, he listens – he is out of the ordinary.”

Gerrard will hope Aston Villa’s offer is now enough to convince Kamara to join in a free transfer from Marseille. Just months after the Ligue 1 outfit demanded £10m to sell their academy product, per Marca.

Marvelous Nakamba flourished in the Villans’ holding role before sustaining a serious knee injury in December. He thrilled Gerrard on-and-off the Villa Park pitch, but is unlikely to return for another three or four-weeks.

Yet while Nakamba reached new heights under Gerrard, Douglas Luiz has struggled to stand in. The Brazilian has not seemed suited to his manager’s demands, and has infuriated him at times with his backwards passing.
