Aston Villa now seeing £7 million was not enough for Idrissa Gueye

As Sky Sports report that Paris Saint-Germain have made a £21.6 million bid for Everton’s Idrissa Gueye, Aston Villa fans must be left wondering what could have been having lost the midfielder for such a small fee following their relegation in 2016.

At the time, the Daily Mail claimed that the Toffees triggered the Senegal international’s release clause for just £7.2 million. That clause was only activated following relegation but, to rub salt into the wounds, meant the club lost £1.8 million on him given that he had cost them £9 million from Lille in 2015.

Now, Everton look set to benefit and reap the reward of signing him at such a bargain price whilst Aston Villa struggle in the Championship.

Having insisted on a more realistic release clause in the case of relegation could have made a big impact to Villa’s financial status following relegation and may well have put sides like the Toffees off.

In the current market, even at £21.6 million, the 29-year-old seems a bargain and Everton must surely try to negotiate for a higher price to increase their profit even more.

The poor management of Aston Villa may have been what led to the inclusion of that clause, perhaps not contemplating the serious threat of relegation, but it is essential that those in charge now have learnt from those mistakes of the past.
