Aston Villa and Newcastle are interested in adding highly-rated Zimbabwe international Marvelous Nakamba to their ranks, according to Zimbabwean publication, The Chronicle.
Newly promoted Villa are leading the chase for his signature. Boss Dean Smith is preparing a £20 million bid to Club Brugge for his services.
The midfield enforcer played in 23 games for the Belgian giants last season. His team-mate Wesley Moraes is awaiting international clearance to sign for Aston Villa.
Although Villa are in pole position for his services, Newcastle aren’t completely out of the race.
Rafa Benitez could soon see his transfer kitty bolstered by Asian investment and that could see them offer more money.
Nakamba is currently at the African Cup of Nations with Zimbabwe and nothing will be resolved until his participation.
It would seem that Villa and Newcastle have a lot of similar targets.
If you believe what you read in the papers, the Magpies were in the race for Moraes before Villa coughed up the cash and agreed on terms with the player.
That will have been a blow to Newcastle and they won’t want to suffer the same fate with Nakamba.
It has been a pretty bleak summer so far for the club, with uncertainties over the board and the manager.
Signing players will soon become a priority and landing Nakamba can bolster an area of the park that looks problematic next season.
