Aberdeen and Scotland defender Scott McKenna was certainly a wanted man in the summer. The 21-year-old was courted by a number of clubs both north and south of the border.
Celtic, according to the BBC, had an offer of £3.5 million for the player rejected. This was clearly nowhere near his asking price. Aston Villa had a late £7 million offer turned down, with Aberdeen unable to find a replacement in the time left in the transfer window to sanction a deal they would have likely accepted.
Aston Villa were unfortunately tied up by financial concerns for much of the summer. It left them unable to move for new players until the takeover which came late in the transfer window. Ultimately, this cost them a chance to sign McKenna, as Aberdeen would have likely accepted such a substantial offer earlier in the summer.

In January, Aston Villa should certainly consider a return bid, especially after the weekend.
Once again, Aberdeen came up short against Celtic as they lost 1-0 in the Scottish League Cup final. The Dons consistently play the bridesmaid to Celtic. In fact, with Rangers now top of the Scottish Premiership, they are now sitting in the front row.
Aston Villa must try and use this feeling of the pointlessness of playing in Scotland to bring McKenna to the Championship, where his countryman John McGinn has thrived.
