Aston Villa must now regret losing out in Toni Leistner chase

In the summer, plenty of teams were being linked with a move for German defender Toni Leistner. The centre-back had proved himself a top player during his time at Union Berlin and was out of contract in the German capital.

According to Berliner Kurier, one of those teams was Aston Villa. The Midlands club was short at centre-back and Leistner looked to be a potential option.

However, Aston Villa missed out. Leistner instead, headed to QPR. After the opening few games of the Championship season, Aston Villa were left happy with that decision. It appeared they had dodged a bullet, especially after Leistner’s dismal display in a 7-1 defeat to West Brom in August.

However, Aston Villa would love to have him now.

Dean Smith’s side still looks short at centre-back and the former Brentford man’s appointment has hardly changed their fortunes. One win and two defeats from his first three games suggest just that. The latest defeat was against QPR on Friday night, with Leistner in brilliant form.

That was a snapshot of his form for the past few two months. Leistner, QPR’s captain, has been in fine form since September and has helped QPR to a run of five games unbeaten. That form currently places them 10th in the Championship, seven places ahead of Aston Villa and just six points off the top of the table Sheffield United.

Aston Villa would love to have the increasingly assured Leistner in their ranks now.
