Jordan Lyden has confirmed on Instagram that he has left boyhood club Aston Villa three months before the end of his contract which expired this summer – so where to next?
The 23-year-old was on loan at Oldham Athletic where he impressed, staring in the Latics surprise 2-1 FA Cup win over Premier League side Fulham. He played eight times for Villa’s senior side.
A defensive midfielder, the Australian is known for his excellent stamina as well as his intricate array of passing. On a free transfer, he would be a good signing for most League One clubs.
Jack Ross has brought a whole host of new talent to his side since taking the Sunderland job last summer. It is almost a completely unrecognisable team from the side that suffered relegation.
Depth in the middle of the park has been somewhat lacking, though. It is an area that Ross is likely to want to improve in the summer window, but he could do just that right now.
That is because Lyden is available to join a new side as of this moment in time, with his Instagram post suggesting that he has left Villa immediately.
The two could be a nice fit and whether Sunderland are back in the Championship or still in League One, Lyden would certainly have a part to play.
