Aston Villa fans delighted as James Chester steps up return to fitness

The 30-year-old played for an hour in a comprehensive win against Manchester United for the under-23s.

Aston Villa have not enjoyed the best of starts to life back in the Premier League following promotion from the Championship last season.

No fewer than 13 new players arrived during the summer and Dean Smith has only seen his side win once in their opening six matches.

It was the turn of the club’s under-23 outfit last night and they were on fire in their fixture against Manchester United at Walsall.

Villa’s young guns ran out 4-1 winners and the game marked the long-awaited return to action for James Chester.

The club captain hasn’t featured for the first-team since January when he played in a 2-1 defeat to Ipswich Town.

Chester managed just over an hour on his return and appeared to come through the game unscathed.

The £30,000-a-week (Spotrac) star could well add something to the Villa ranks. Regular central defenders Tyrone Mings and Bjorn Engels will certainly be kept on their toes by the thought of Chester returning to the first-team fold.

A popular figure around Villa Park, the supporters were naturally delighted to see their captain step up his recovery.

Following his first game back for the under-23 setup, Villa fans took to Twitter to offer their thoughts on his return.
