Aston Villa are preparing to make a bid of £20 million for Stoke City goalkeeper Jack Butland, according to a report from The Sun.
Villa boss Dean Smith is keen to add another stopper to his ranks during the close season and is set to test Stoke’s resolve.
Jed Steer kept goal for the Villans during the second half of last season, but some competition is definitely required between the posts.
Butland is keen to make a genuine fist of wrestling the England gloves away from Jordan Pickford and to do that he must be playing in the Premier League.

Aston Villa would be a decent move for Butland. He would certainly be handed the gloves if Villa paid in excess of £20 million for his services, whilst he would arrive at a club on a massive upward curve.
The news has been met with mixed reactions on Twitter from the Villa faithful, however.
Some would relish the chance to see the 26-year-old out on the Villa Park turf:

Other more cynical Aston Villa supporters are desperately hoping that Dean Smith doesn’t pursue the goalkeeper.
Some believe other custodians are more suitable, whilst some simply don’t think Butland represents value for money:
