Aston Villa in pole position to sign ‘excellent’ player for just £21m this summer

Aston Villa are now thought to be in the driving seat to add an incredibly exciting talent to Unai Emery’s squad in the summer.

Right now, Unai Emery must be feeling confident that his side can secure Champions League football for next season, something that will change the landscape of the club’s recruitment.

No one at Villa will want players signing purely for that reason, but it definitely helps prove the merits of the club’s project to players across Europe.

Moussa Diaby was a big coup last summer, even if he’s still been slightly inconsistent during his debut season in England.

But if Villa can also win the Europa Conference League this year, which seems a real possibility, then there will be very few more attractive projects across the continent right now.

That being said, Villa have been linked with a move for Inter Milan’s Denzel Dumfries of late.

Matty Cash seems to have somewhat lost the trust of his manager, who is currently preferring a more robust back four, with Ezri Konsa on the right.

But following a new report by FC Inter News in Italy, that could be about to change.

If replacing Cash with Konsa was supposed to be a conservative move, then signing £21m-rated Dumfries certainly won’t be.

The right wing-back is known for his marauding runs, often finding himself in the box on the end of chances like a centre-forward for The Netherlands.

And according to this report, Villa are now thought to be the front-runners for his signature.

Dumfries will only have one year left on his contract after this season, and could be available for a cut-price as mentioned.

This information claims that Villa will probably invest in a right-back, meaning their interest is more serious than that of West Ham or Manchester United.

Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso and Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo also of interest

Erik ten Hag’s side have long chased the right-back, but the uncertain future of the United boss means a move for Dumfries is unlikely.

Of course, it’s interesting to note that this report claims that Villa have also been scouting Juventus’ Andrea Cambiaso and Napoli’s Giovanni Di Lorenzo.

Both of those moves are thought to be unrealistic for Aston Villa in the summer, given they are both seen as unavailable at their club.

But that adds to the idea that ‘excellent‘ Denzel Dumfries could be the one.

All that being said, Alan Shearer was recently praising one of Villa’s ‘flawless’ defenders who’s already at the club.
