Aston Villa are set to see plenty of change this summer, with failing to win promotion set to see a cost-cutting mission at Villa Park. One apparent repercussion will be no extension to the loan deals at the club. That includes the goalkeeper Sam Johnstone. The Manchester United owned talent has been the club’s number one for over a season now but it seems he will not be returning in 2018-19.
So if Aston Villa really want to cut costs this summer, then they have to consider giving one of their current crop a chance between the sticks. The player in question is Jed Steer.
It is almost hard to believe that the goalkeeper is still only 25-years-old considering how long he has seemingly been on the cusp of first-team football at Aston Villa.
The former England youth international joined Aston Villa in 2013 from Norwich City but has had to bide his time for a chance at Villa Park. In fact, he has not got that chance.

Steer has played just one league game for Villa since his arrival but had very successful loan spells at Huddersfield Town – including playing every game of the Terriers 2015-16 Championship campaign.
This season he clearly became the club’s second-choice ahead of Mark Bunn and featured in three cup fixtures for the club, in which he impressed. But, unfortunately, he suffered a shoulder injury and missed the majority of the campaign.
Steer is a brilliant goalkeeper but has so far not been given the chance at Aston Villa. Injuries have not helped his cause. As well as the injury this season, he suffered an Achilles tendon tear last season that put him out of action for most of the campaign.
Hopefully, this summer Steer can manage to get himself fit and convince the club to give him the chance to thrive at Aston Villa. Steer is a brilliant option, when fit, and could save the club valuable money this summer.
