Aston Villa are reportedly keen on bringing Daniel Sturridge to Villa Park on a free transfer this summer after the striker was released by Liverpool – and some Villa fans are keen on the idea.

The Sun claim Villa are considering an approach to sign 29-year-old Sturridge, who is said to be a fan of the club and came through the ranks in Villa’s academy as a youth player for many years.

Sturridge was one of two senior Liverpool players to be released by Jurgen Klopp’s side this summer, after falling down the pecking order as a multitude of injuries hampered his progress. Alberto Moreno also left the club.

The England international had clocked up 160 appearances for Liverpool, finding the back of the net 68 times in all competitions. But Roberto Firmino is first choice, while Divock Origi’s Champions League exploits make him second.

Villa have been very active in the window, bringing in Jota, Matt Targett, Kortney Hause, Anwar El Ghazi and Wesley Moraes, while a deal to land Tyrone Mings permanently looks close to completion.

The issues surrounding a deal for Sturridge will be whether he has put his injury demons behind him, and whether Villa can persuade Sturridge to accept a pay cut – with Spotrac claiming he was earning £130,000 at Liverpool.

Sturridge could be added to that list if Villa’s interest is genuine, and fans have reacted on Twitter with some urging their club to land the former Manchester City and Chelsea star this summer.
