Fulham were relegated from the Premier League after just one season in the top flight after a 4-1 defeat against FA Cup semi-finalists Watford at Vicarage Road last night.
The Cottagers’ return to the big-time has been shambolic; once more characterised by managerial instability, an influx of players who haven’t done the business and a complete removal of the flowing style that got them promoted in the first place.
That passing football saw them beat Aston Villa in last May’s Championship play-off final, when Tom Cairney’s goal sealed a 1-0 victory for Slavisa Jokanovic’s ten-man side.
On top of that, Fulham snared Joe Bryan from under Villa’s noses in the summer transfer window with a last-gasp swoop and the promise of Premier League football.
It’s petty, but Villa fans on Twitter were keen to revel in Fulham’s relegation last night, made even sweeter by the way they have truly botched their plans since winning the richest game in football.
Villa supporters are obviously buoyed by their own team’s recent rise into the play-offs once more, and there is still a possibility that the two clubs will swap divisions next season.
We’ve picked out some of the best reaction on Twitter as a niche and unlikely rivalry flared up again online…
