Aston Villa fans reckon James Chester will leave, if club sign Bjorn Engels

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Bjorn Engels from Stade Reims this summer and are said to be in advanced talks to land the defender – but Villa fans reckon his signature could mean curtains for another star.

French newspaper L’Equipe have claimed that Villa are closing in on the 24-year-old defender, who only signed a permanent deal with the Ligue 1 side at the beginning of the summer.

Former Brugge and Olympiacos star Engels was sent on loan to Reims last summer and impressed in the top tier of French football, clocking up 35 appearances in all competitions. It saw a move become permanent this summer.

However, Villa are looking to lure him to the Premier League and talks are said to be at an advanced stage. The Midlands club have already landed Tyrone Mings, Kortney Hause and Ezri Konsa.

Three new centre-backs, along with club captain James Chester, gives Dean Smith four options at centre-back. The addition of Engels would see Villa boast five players for just two starting spots.

That is why Villa fans have reacted to the Engels news by claiming that £8million signing (Birmingham Mail) Chester could be offloaded if the Belgian does indeed sign for Villa. The 30-year-old is in danger of losing his place.

A multitude of injuries last term, combined with the fact he has entered the final 12 months of his contract at Villa Park suggests the Wales international could be on his way – and Villa fans have predicted his exit.
