Aston Villa threw the script firmly out of the window by thumping Premier League champions Liverpool 7-2 at Villa Park.

A hat-trick by Ollie Watkins, two for Jack Grealish and goals by Ross Barkley and John McGinn made sure a Mo Salah brace proved in vain.

The Villans were sensational throughout and could have scored more on a fruitful night for Dean Smith’s men.

One man who once again carried Villa home was Grealish who offered a timely reminder to Gareth Southgate of his qualities.

The 25-year-old was in devastating form and added three assists to his two goals on an enjoyable night.

Liverpool couldn’t live with Grealish and he will surely get a chance to start for England during the next two weeks on international duty.

Supporters are often quick to rave about Grealish but even more so after this lethal performance.

The Villans handed Grealish a new five-year contract worth £135,000-a-week recently and on this showing, he looked worth every penny.
