Aston Villa fans react to news of Birmingham’s nine-point deduction

Birmingham City have been deducted nine Championship points by the EFL, for breaching Profitability and Sustainability rules, according to Sky Sports.

The punishment kicks in immediately and takes them from an outside bet to qualify for the play-offs to 18th in the division, just five points above the relegation zone.

Garry Monk’s side have reportedly lost more than the £39m allowable over three seasons – last term they lost £37.5m alone – and the EFL felt they didn’t do enough thereafter to cut their expenditure.

The sanction is the first under the new rules – introduced before the 2016/17 season – and raises questions about the dealings of other sides potentially.

Of course Aston Villa fans online had plenty to say about the sanction. While some predictably laughed at the fate of their rivals; after beating them 1-0 on their own patch and thereafter scrambling into the top six, the thought of the Blues being shunted down the league is naturally hilarious.

But some were concerned about Villa’s own spending habits drawing attention if they don’t get promoted to the Premier League this season…
