Atalanta held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw in their Champions League clash last night, picking up their first points in the competition. It was certainly an improvement from the performance a fortnight ago, when the Italians were pasted 5-1 at The Etihad Stadium.

Both games, however, did not go unnoticed by Aston Villa fans.

Because Kyle Walker was not the only former Aston Villa player between the sticks last night in Bergamo. Pierluigi Gollini featured in both games against the Premier League champions and Aston Villa fans will undoubtedly be shocked to hear how well the player has got on since leaving Villa Park.

Signed by countryman Roberto Di Matteo for a reported (The Sun) £4.1 million in 2016 the former Hellas Verona man never settled into life at Villa Park.

After Di Matteo was sacked, Gollini struggled to impress Steve Bruce and played just 20 times for the club before being loaned to Atalanta in 2016. The Italian was initially a back-up stopper at the club before becoming first-choice last season after the deal was made permanent.

Now the 24-year-old is being linked with the Italian national team and a potential Inter Milan move after an impressive 12 months.

Aston Villa fans have certainly been surprised to see him in Champions League action the past couple of weeks.
