Aston Villa fans react to Callum O’Hare’s pre-season performance at Shrewsbury

Aston Villa midfielder Callum O’Hare spent the second half of last season out on loan with League Two outfit Carlisle United but has been included in the club’s pre-season plans.

He was brought on as a half-time substitute in Villa’s 1-0 win over Shrewsbury yesterday, earned by Scott Hogan’s second half strike in a game where 22 players got a runout.

But in a game that was not much to marvel at, O’Hare staked a claim to remain part of Dean Smith’s plans for the forthcoming Premier League season.

Of course, Villa have spent big so far in the transfer market and will likely continue to do so – making O’Hare’s path to the first team an increasingly difficult one to navigate.

But judging by the reaction to his second half cameo on Twitter, the local boy is a popular figure among the supporters who want to see him make a breakthrough this season.

There was an acknowledgement that he may need to wait for the cup competitions and get into the gym to bulk up like Jack Grealish did after he broke through – but the supporters are excited.

As much as Villa are spending, they can’t keep going out and getting new players in every position – so if an exciting, passionate player like O’Hare were to make the step up, it could be pretty handy for Smith as he prepares for the top flight…
