Dean Smith made a host of changes to his Aston Villa side for the visit of Wolves in the EFL Cup but still oversaw a 2-1 victory which sent his team into the quarter finals.
The competition represents perhaps Villa’s strongest chance of silverware and although survival is the main aim for the season, a return to Wembley for the third season running would get the fans excited.
Winning is also a good habit to get into, especially when it’s against a West Midlands rival, and Smith’s rotated side got Villa back on track after the 3-0 defeat against Manchester City on Saturday.
Goals from Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady, either side of Patrick Cutrone’s equaliser, got the job done and the supporters were impressed with the latter.

The Egyptian captained his side on the night and his winning goal, beating stand-in stopper John Ruddy at the near post, topped off a strong, professional display.
Many Villa fans on Twitter were very impressed with the £25,000-a-week (Spotrac) man’s performance, after he tweeted his delight at grabbing a goal and putting his side in the hat for the next round.
