A number of Aston Villa fans have taken to Twitter after Dean Smith claimed – in comments reported by the Express and Star – that the Villans are looking to agree a new contract with Douglas Luiz, as well as Ezri Konsa.

Villa continue to defy many expectations with their form this season. They go into Thursday’s clash with Burnley just five points off the top four. It, of course, needs to be noted that most of the sides above them will have played three games more by the time Villa next play.

And one of the key reasons for their impressive performance is the form of Luiz. The Brazilian has been a revelation for the club, particularly in the last year.

And ahead of their next game, Smith confirmed that he would like to see new deals for both the midfielder, as well as Konsa.

“I’m not sure who we’re talking to but Douglas is obviously one who I think has a big future at this football club,” he said, as reported by the Express and Star, when asked about potentially handing out new contracts.

“Ezri is another one, but a lot of our players are on long-term contracts anyway. We’ve got a lot of players tied up looking at the future.”

The news that Konsa may be getting fresh terms has gone down incredibly well. But it does appear that plenty of Villa fans are particularly pleased about Smith’s comments on Luiz.

The 22-year-old – who earns around £33,000-a-week, according to Spotrac – has been an inspired signing for Villa. And he is probably one of the players the club are expecting to face a battle to keep in the coming years.

So, to the fans, it would be a huge statement if they could now tie him down to fresh terms. It would be a further sign that the club are moving in the right direction at a rapid rate.
