Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has strengthened his squad with the signing of Chelsea midfielder Ross Barkley – and supporters have been reacting on Twitter.
The England international has been bumped down the pecking order at Stamford Bridge following a summer spending spree by Frank Lampard.
Last season, Barkley scored five goals and registered five assists from his 31 appearances in all competitions.
The 26-year-old has scored for Chelsea this season in a 6-0 Carabao Cup victory over Championship outfit Barnsley and has also made two substitute appearances in the Premier League.
Aston Villa have already signed Matty Cash, Ollie Watkins, Emi Martinez and Bertrand Traore this summer, with Barkley another useful addition.
The Villans secured Premier League survival on the final day of the 2019/20 campaign and it would appear Smith has changed his tact with transfers this summer.
At the start of last season, Smith spent over £100 million on players from all over Europe – many of who didn’t have the desired effect.
Barkley signed for Chelsea in 2018 for £15 million from Everton but has failed to really make an impact at Stamford Bridge.
Viewed as one of the country’s brightest talents earlier in his career, Barkley will hope to start firing once again at Villa Park.
Here is a selection of Tweets from the Villa faithful after the Chelsea man joins on loan.
