Aston Villa have confirmed on their official website that striker Scott Hogan has moved on loan to bitter rivals Birmingham City, after struggling for game time at Stoke City – and Villa fans have reacted on Twitter.
Hogan, 27, went on loan to Stoke City at the beginning of the season after being deemed completely surplus to requirements by Dean Smith. At Stoke, the Ireland international managed just four starts in the Championship.
The £12million signing from Brentford did clock up 15 appearances in all competitions, scoring twice in a 2-2 draw with Derby County and a 2-1 win over Swansea City. However, he has switched loan sides – with a surprise move to Birmingham City.
Birmingham and Villa are known for their bitter rivalry, including recent instances of a fan punching Jack Grealish last season. Despite the Second-City rivalry, Hogan has moved on loan to Pep Clotet’s side until the end of the season.
Despite Wesley’s injury and Jonathan Kodjia moving to the middle east, Villa have sanctioned a loan to Birmingham rather than recalling him. Dean Smith has signed Mbwana Samatta, and is likely to bring in another striker before Friday.
Aston Villa fans reacted to the confirmed news on Twitter and many are surprised that the rivalry between the two sides has been put aside for Hogan to join the Championship side. Others are glad he’s left the club.
