It appears that some Aston Villa fans had plenty of nasty flashbacks during Vincent Kompany’s testimonial on Wednesday as a familiar defensive partnership was revived at the Etihad Stadium.
Manchester City’s legends drew 2-2 with a squad made up of Premier League legends. And amongst those who featured for the Citizens were Micah Richards and Joleon Lescott.

Lescott started the game, while Richards came off the bench during the latter stages for City – who opened the scoring inside 68 seconds before needing a late header from cult-hero Benjani to secure the draw.
For Villa fans, Lescott and Richards’s presence in the same defence brought back painful memories of the season in which they were relegated from the Premier League.

Lescott was only at Villa Park for one season, but certainly managed to anger the supporters during that short stint with the Villans.
Meanwhile, Richards signed for the club during the same summer and only left earlier this year when his contract expired. Remarkably, Lescott still managed to make more league appearances for Villa than Richards did.
The defender – who announced his retirement shortly after his release – was plagued by injury. His final appearance for the club proved to be the 1-1 draw with Wolves in October 2016.
Bringing back bad memories
So seeing both men feature for City in Kompany’s testimonial may have reminded Villa fans of a dark period in their recent history. And many took to Twitter to comment on the pair’s appearances and performances at the Etihad…
