Aston Villa fans react as free agent promotion hero Glenn Whelan joins Hearts

Republic of Ireland international midfielder Glenn Whelan has signed for Scottish outfit Hearts following his release from Aston Villa this summer, as per the club’s official website.

Whelan has signed a one-year deal in Scotland after Villa let him leave despite the fact he helped them back into the Premier League last season.

He said: “I’m delighted. I just want to get my head down and now and stuck into things. Once I knew Hearts were involved then it was something that I really had to think about. The manager’s been great.

“The manager has been crucial to getting me up here, to be honest. He’s shown a lot of ambition in where he wants the club to go. I came up and trained with the lads for a couple of days last week and I was really impressed. I’m ready to go to dig in and get some results.”

It’s clear to see the affection Villa fans still have for Whelan despite the fact he’s no longer their player – many of them took to Twitter to wish him well with his move.

The odd one even wouldn’t have minded him sticking around at Villa – despite their hugely exciting summer spending spree – and they were keen to emphasise what a top professional he was.
