Dean Smith’s position at Aston Villa could reportedly be under threat going into the weekend – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter have responded to claim it may be time for him to exit.
Smith has been an extremely popular Villa manager since his appointment midway through last season, as he got them promoted from the Championship back to the Premier League and also lead them to a Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City this campaign.
But his team ultimately do sit 19th in the league table right now and are in danger of an immediate relegation back to the Championship, as they are two points from safety and in poor form.
According to the Telegraph, Smith is potentially fighting for his job as manager going into the weekend fixture against Chelsea in the league.
The report explains that a heavy defeat could bring the 48-year-old’s position under serious threat and he needs a response from his group.
They have lost five games in a row across all competitions and look in serious relegation trouble after losing 4-0 away to Leicester City on Monday night.
A selection of Villa supporters on social media have shown their gratitude towards Smith for the job he’s done since arriving, but have suggested that now could be a good time to get rid of him and allow a new man to try guide them to Premier League safety.
Here are some Villa fans on the Smith speculation:
Never thought I would say it but it’s the right decision. Edens isn’t here to mess around. Give Big Sam whatever he wants to keep us up then look long term in the summer.

Unfortunately I think it needs to be done. There’s still 30 points to play for. I genuinely think another 10 will keep us up. Its a massive ask I know but Under Smith we will never get them. I think Smith being a Villa fan has brought him more time from the fans. But now its time

Should have been fired before the Jan transfer window. Yes you will say he does not decide the transfer policy but ultimately Villa has spent more than nearly every other club and for what? The manager is to blame. Great guy and a being Villa fan is not enough

Deano will always have a place in our hearts, he knows that whatever happens, he gave us memories that we’ll never forget and live on, but right now all that matters is Villa, nothing personal if he does go we have to go all out for Rafa imo at least try and sell him the project

I like Smith and couldn’t thank him enough for what he has done for the club and the fans. But the club should have looked at this over Xmas.
