Aston Villa fans react as Danny Drinkwater becomes club’s first January signing

Aston Villa have made their first signing of the January transfer window, landing Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater until the end of the season.

Drinkwater joined Chelsea from Leicester in 2017 but his career at Stamford Bridge never quite took off and his loan spell at Burnley did not work out either.

But the former Manchester United man has quality and Dean Smith told the club’s official website: “Danny was a key member of Leicester City’s title winning team and has represented England so he is a vastly experienced player.

“He will strengthen our squad significantly.”

There were plenty of fans on Twitter happy with the deal, pointing to the significance of Tyrone Mings’ loan spell last season.

Some said that Mings was a poor signing last January but has gone on to be a key player for Villa, getting into the England setup as well.

Smith will hope that Drinkwater can transform his fortunes in a similar way after a couple of years where he has drifted in west London and show the quality which made him a Premier League winner in 2016.
