Aston Villa are reportedly looking to sign AS Roma striker Gregoire Defrel this summer and are said to be rivalling Cagliari for the Frenchman’s signature – but Villa fans are not so sure on the striker.

Italian newspaper Il Messaggero have claimed that 28-year-old Defrel is surplus to requirements at Roma, despite the Frenchman joining the 2018 Champions League semi-finalists last summer for £20.5million (ESPN).

Defrel went on loan to Roma during 2017-18 and made just 20 appearances for the Italian giants, scoring only one goal. The loan was automatically made permanent, which saw Roma pay over the odds for the ex-Sassuolo striker.

Defrel was immediately loaned out to Sampdoria, where he impressed. He scored 12 goals for the Serie A side, despite starting just 28 of his 39 league and cup appearances. He has now returned to Roma.

Cagliari have been linked for much of the summer with Defrel but Villa have now entered the running and are looking to give Defrel a chance to shine in the Premier League. It remains to be seen what kind of price Roma want.

Aston Villa fans reacted to the news on Twitter with the majority believing he is too old for Dean Smith’s transfer model, or that many would rather Brentford’s Neal Maupay. While a handful of fans think he would be a good addition.
