Aston Villa are reportedly looking for a new striker and the Midlands club have been linked with a January move for AS Roma striker Gregoire Defrel who remains on loan at Sassuolo – and Villa fans have reacted to that reported news.
The Telegraph have claimed that 28-year-old Defrel is being eyed by Villa, after Brazilian powerhouse Wesley suffered a long-term knee injury against Burnley. Villa needed a striker anyway, but the injury to Wesley has intensified that need.
The likes of Olivier Giroud, Michy Batshuayi, Jay Rodriguez, Britt Assombalonga and Krzysztof Piatek have all been linked with Villa, who confirmed their first January signing this week – with the loan addition of Chelsea midfielder Danny Drinkwater.
Another name has cropped up in the form of Defrel, who is struggling in his second spell at Sassuolo – on loan from Roma. He has managed just eight Serie A appearances this season, scoring one goal, before suffering an ankle injury.
Roma signed Defrel in a deal worth £19.5million (Roma official website) in the summer of 2017 after he scored 16 goals for Sassuolo in 2016-17. But he has since played just 20 times for Roma, scoring a solitary goal.
He went on loan to Sampdoria during 2018-19 – scoring 12 in 39 games – before returning to Sassuolo on loan this term. Hardly the most exciting goalscoring form, but that has not deterred Villa. Fans of the Premier League side have reacted on Twitter.
Quite pacey I believe. Looks decent from what I’ve seen

He’s hardly prolific

Better than Assombalonga I reckon

12 goals in 29 games last season decent, 1 goal in 8 appearances this season not great, 41 goals in 156 appearances Seria A, had an ankle injury this season but can play anywhere across the front LW ST occasional RW, Piatek and Defrel is exciting imo if we land them

He performed well next to Quagliarella last year making me think that we’d need to buy him a solid strike partner
