Aston Villa fans react as Carabao Cup quarter-final opponents are revealed

Aston Villa fans have reacted on social media to the news the club will face Liverpool in the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Dean Smith’s team defeated Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at Villa Park on Wednesday night, and will face Jurgen Klopp’s Reds, who beat Arsenal on penalties at Anfield after playing out a 5-5 thriller in normal time.

Klopp named a young team for the visit of the Gunners, with Sepp van den Berg, Caoimhín Kelleher, Harvey Elliott, Neco Williams and Rhian Brewster all handed starts.

Villa were good value for their win over Wolves, mustering up 20 shots in the game and 71% possession (BBC Sport).

Goals came from Anwar El Ghazi and Ahmed Elmohamady.

Villa face Liverpool and will be hoping that the home tie can give them the edge over the current Premier League leaders and European champions.

Interestingly, the tie is actually in a bit of doubt at the moment, with Klopp already threatening to forfeit due to being in the Club World Cup in Qatar on December 18 (Guardian). Carabao Cup ties are to be played on the week beginning 16 December.

Villa fans react

There was a mixed reaction to the draw from Villa fans, with some less than impressed but others actually quite hopeful given Liverpool’s jam-packed fixture list.
