Aston Villa midfielder Conor Hourihane produced some magic to down Newcastle United.
The Villans moved clear of the relegation zone thanks to Hourihane’s efforts. The Republic of Ireland midfielder scored the opener and set up the second in the 2-0 win over Newcastle.
It was a story of two set-pieces for Aston Villa and Newcastle. Aston Villa deserved the win as they were the dominant side but it needed a magic touch from Hourihane to get things going.
Hourihane makes the difference
Jack Grealish was fouled on the edge of the box, presenting Aston Villa with a free-kick opportunity. It was a bit close but a clever routine changed the angle and Hourihane curled it around the wall with his left foot.
Shortly after, Aston Villa had another free-kick just outside the box. This one was a bit wide so Hourihane opted to swing it in, rather than shoot. The 28-year-old’s quick, low cross was too much for the Newcastle defence to deal with and Anwar El Ghazi tapped in from close range.
Aston Villa fans praised Hourihane’s performance. Here are some tweets about the midfield ace.
Since the start of last season, Conor Hourihane has been involved in more league goals for Villa than any other player at the club with 9 goals and 13 assists.
