John McGinn started for Scotland in their defeat to Russia on Friday night – and some Aston Villa fans hailed their player for the quality of his international performance.
Steve Clarke’s side were beaten 2-1 at Hampden in a European Championship qualifier and it leaves them fourth in Group I.
McGinn opened the scoring for the hosts after just 10 minutes, as he reacted quickly in the penalty area and steered in his first international goal with his favoured left foot.
The central midfielder lasted 62 minutes before he was withdrawn from the pitch and showed flashes of the kind of form he’s been in so far the season.
Russia did go on to win three points and drew level through Artem Dzyuba int he 40th minute, before Stephen O’Donnell’s own goal int he second-half gave them an away win.
A selection of Villa supporters on social media were delighted with McGinn’s international display and it’s clear he’s a major favourite with them.
He’s shown no fear since stepping up to the Premier League this campaign and is taking everything in his stride.
The box-to-box midfielder has scored one and assisted another in the opening four league games, while he has been one of the standout performers for club manager Dean Smith in 2019.
Here are some Villa fans commenting on McGinn:
Goal from McGinn yesterday for Scotland, I think he’s gonna end up playing for City or Liverpool soon, he’s world class.

John McGinn costs £2.5 million, now scoring a goal in a international against a decent Russian team. #avfc worth so much more now? £40 mil ?
