Aston Villa cruised into the fourth round of the Carabao Cup with a win against Bristol City on Thursday – and some of the club’s supporters on Twitter were praising their defender Ahmed Elmohamady for his performance.

Dean Smith’s side beat Championship opponent Bristol City 3-0 at Ashton Gate to continue the club’s brilliant start to the new season.

The Midlands club have now won back-to-back games in the cup to reach the fourth round, plus they started the Premier League season with a victory against Sheffield United.

Anwar El Ghazi opened the scoring against Bristol City, before summer signings Bertrand Traore and Ollie Watkins also got on the scoresheet.

A selection of Villa supporters on social media believe that despite the quality going forward it was a defender that stole the show.

Elmohamady, who captained the team, was a real leader and presence at the back to help keep a clean sheet.

The 33-year-old Egyptian is a right-back by trade, but has the versatility to play a number of positions and he slotted into a centre-back position against Bristol City with ease.

He showed his ability in the air, plus his composure in playing out from the back and his positional awareness capped off a brilliant individual contribution.

One fan called him the best ever £1million signing and he joined for that fee back in 2017 after Villa activated a release clause in his contract at Hull City (BBC).
